Artificial Intelligence and Everyday Life

Practical ways to use AI while protecting privacy, checking accuracy and keeping people responsible for important decisions.

What AI can help you do

Households and older adults

Explain unfamiliar terms, draft questions, translate ordinary text and organize routine tasks. Never use an AI answer as the only basis for medical, legal or financial decisions.

Students and educators

Brainstorm, practice, summarize and compare ideas while following school rules. Students should understand and be able to explain work submitted in their names.

Farms and small businesses

Draft marketing copy, organize records, compare options and create first versions of plans. Verify prices, regulations, technical instructions and funding information with trusted sources.

Community organizations

Prepare outreach drafts, meeting outlines and plain-language materials. Keep confidential resident, donor, student, patient and personnel information out of public AI tools.

Five rules for responsible use

  1. Protect private information. Do not enter passwords, identification numbers, medical records, financial data or confidential organizational information.
  2. Check important claims. AI can produce information that sounds confident but is incomplete, outdated or wrong.
  3. Keep a person responsible. Qualified people should review decisions involving health, education, employment, benefits, safety, credit or public services.
  4. Watch for unfair results. Ask whether recommendations work equally well for different people, neighborhoods and circumstances.
  5. Be transparent. Follow school and workplace rules and disclose meaningful AI assistance when the audience needs to know.
